The Situation
The Olympian Leadership lesson was designed for the DevLearn DemoFest conference competition, showcasing innovative leadership training techniques through an immersive, mythological theme. This project was crafted to engage learners by placing them in the roles of iconic Olympian gods like Zeus, Athena, Hera, and Poseidon, each representing different leadership challenges such as decision-making, strategic thinking, and relationship management.
The Challenge
The challenge was to create an engaging, interactive, and visually striking course that not only taught leadership skills but also tracked learners' progress in real-time. I aimed to achieve this without purchasing expensive third party tools, maintaining cost-efficiency while integrating cutting-edge AI, dynamic leaderboards, and smooth automation. The course needed to provide participants with a personalized learning experience, allowing them to select their avatars and receive real-time updates on their performance in comparison to others.
The Process
To bring this ambitious project to life, I employed several innovative techniques and tools:
Text-to-Image AI: I generated unique, mythologically inspired characters for each avatar option. These AI-generated images were further refined and customized using Photoshop to ensure a cohesive visual style. (Tools Used: www.playground.com/create, Adobe Photoshop)
Image-to-Video AI: Each character was fully animated, bringing the avatars to life as they dynamically interacted with learners throughout the course. The AI-generated video clips were enriched with audio from Eleven Labs and further enhanced with visual effects and editing in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. (Tools Used: https://elevenlabs.io/, www.runwayml.com, Adobe Premier Pro or Adobe After Effects)
Custom Leaderboards: I designed two versions of dynamic leaderboards, offering both a cost-effective Google Sheets solution and an advanced Excel-based version. The Google Sheets leaderboard uses a dynamic URL pre-fill system that auto-submits data from the course into a Google Form, linked to a Google Sheet. This allowed for real-time score updates and rankings, complete with conditional formatting for gold, silver, and bronze positions.
API Integration & Power Automate: For the more advanced leaderboard, I utilized API integration, JavaScript, and Power Automate to seamlessly export variables—like the learner's chosen avatar, score, and name—into an Excel sheet. This method allowed for real-time updates on the final screen of the course, where learners could instantly see how they ranked against others.
The result was a smooth, real-time leaderboard experience that gave learners instant feedback on their performance, complete with their chosen avatar displayed next to their name.
